DISASTER PREVENTION SCHOOL

SINCE2021

In the volcanic eruption disaster of the Democratic Republic of the Congo that occurred in 2021, Nakayoshi Gakuen provided disaster support of 2 million yen as the only Japanese organization from the second day of the disaster. As an international NGO, we have established the Nakayoshi Disaster Prevention School for the first time in the future in order to take root in disaster countermeasures locally. This disaster prevention school project, which connects Japan's disaster prevention cities and other countries, is highly evaluated both at home and abroad.

Experienced Congolese volcanic disaster support activities

May 22, 2021. We will never forget this day. Nyiragongo volcano erupted in Goma, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Nakayoshi Gakuen operates, causing great damage. We thought about what we could do for the locals from far away Japan and took action. With prompt fund-raising activities, remittances to the local area, and disaster relief activities in collaboration with local staff, until large organizations such as the United Nations and the government are ready, we kept distributing water, food, and blankets from the second day of the disaster. Nakayoshi Gakuen was in charge of the "emergency support" . In the three-month activity we collected a donation of 2 million yen and saved the lives of many victims. This is a big achievement compared to the Korean government's 15 million yen aid. Everyone recognized the form of support that we can provide because we have built close relationships with the local community.
We not only sent donations, but also created and delivered appropriate support forms based on the information sent in real time from the site. One of them is "Volcanic Gas Video". In response to a series of unexplained suffocation deaths in the field, Representative Nakamura gathered the knowledge of Japanese volcano experts and created a warning video. Local people prevented suffocation by watching the video.

Disaster experience for the future

The idea of disaster prevention education

In the disaster, "unexpected" things happen. Moreover, if it is a disaster in the world, not in Japan, something we would not expect will happen, depending on the situation. In the volcanic disaster in DRCongo, incredible information came in one after another, such as people who went to see lava were suffocated by volcanic gas one after another, and more than 700 lost children were generated during evacuation.

We have been conducting educational support activities centered on basic academic ability, and we are convinced that disaster prevention education can protect the "future" for many people. Our country, Japan, has world-class technology and knows the way in disaster prevention activities. We thought of a disaster prevention class that would utilize for everyone at this disaster. That is Nakayoshi Disaster Prevention School.

We quickly distribute water, food, and blankets to the victims, create a warning video for volcanic gas, and develop a "Nakayoshi Band" to prevent lost children. We are thinking and implementing it based on our efforts. This initiative is rare among overseas NGOs and is attracting attention in each country.

Established Nakayoshi Disaster Prevention School

Congo's first school to teach disaster prevention

Three months after the eruption of the volcano, we visited the disaster area. At the refugee camp we did an event encouraging them.  Refugees gathered by actually participating in our disaster relief activities locally, but at the same time we witnessed the harsh conditions of people who lost their homes and property.

There is no "end" to a disaster. Even if the volcanic eruption and lava activity subside, it does not mean that the lives of the affected people will be restored. Before traveling, we visited a Japanese volcano countermeasure expert to learn about volcanic disaster prevention. And in collaboration with the government agency for the first time as Nakayoshi Gakuen, we established Nakayoshi Disaster Prevention School in DRCongo. We would like to thank the Kagoshima City Crisis Management Division, Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Shimabara City Citizen Safety Division, and Unzendake Disaster Memorial Hall for their cooperation.

Connecting Kagoshima and Shimabara in Japan, a disaster prevention school

In the 2021 Nyiragongo volcanic eruption disaster, we carried out various activities to help the Congolese companions. Starting with disaster relief immediately after the outbreak, reconstruction assistance, establishment of a disaster prevention school to prepare for future disasters.

Though we're disaster prevention amateurs, we were able to carry out this activity thanks to the cooperation of Japanese experts.
Immediately after the disaster occurred, Dr. Masato Iguchi, the director of the Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute, gave me advice and used it as a reference for various activities such as creating volcanic gas videos.
With the introduction of Professor Iguchi, I participated in the Sakurajima evacuation training program in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, which is engaged in the highest level of disaster prevention activities in Japan, and was able to learn about disaster prevention. We really appreciate the cooperation of everyone in the Kagoshima City Crisis Management Division.

In addition, 2021 is a milestone year of the 30th anniversary of the eruption of Mt. Unzen Fugen in Nagasaki Prefecture, and we also received the cooperation of Shimabara City, which is focusing on disaster prevention activities. With the help of everyone in the Shimabara City Citizens' Safety Division, we had a lecture by Shinichi Sugimoto, the director of the Disaster Memorial Hall, who spearheaded the scene at the time of the eruption. In addition, Mr. Sugimoto gave a message to Nakayoshi Disaster Prevention School and exhibited it in the classroom.

As the Japanese word "when in trouble,  help each other", many people joined us for DRCongo, though which is far away. Japanese courageous actions have given courage to many victims in the local DRCongo, and we have received words of gratitude from many. We also hope that this will be an opportunity for us Japanese to become aware of disaster prevention in Japan.

The world becomes one with the keyword "disaster prevention". Nakayoshi Disaster Prevention School will carry out such activities. We look forward to your continued support and support.
